Homes Made for Entertaining: Making a Lasting Impression (Part 1 of 3)

Welcome to this 3 part series on entertaining guests in your home. Creating spaces for entertaining is easily in the top 5 reasons clients seek me out to design their home. I’m going to give away some of my favorite ways to wow your guests.

When guests step into your home, it's your chance to make a lasting impression. The art of wowing your guests lies in thoughtfulness, both in design and, of course, your generous hospitality. Every detail comes together to create an incredible experience. Here are 4 essential elements to captivate your guests from the moment they enter your home, leaving them wow’d by your impeccable taste.

1. The Welcoming Entryway

The entryway sets the stage for your guests' journey into your home. First things first, ditch the clutter. Entryways can be magnets for clutter with coats, shoes, bags, and mail. Clever storage is key. We want clean lines and nothing to distract from guests feeling welcomed and wow’d from the start. Somewhere to tuck coats away is a must and a curated console table can hold keys and mail discreetly. A mirror or fantastic piece of art that compliments the space is a great thing to consider as well.

Do not neglect amazing entry lighting! Put a dimmer on every light in your home and select fixtures that serve the space well. This is a great opportunity to select fixtures with personality that sets the tone. Entryways and powder rooms are ideal spots to have fun with design, so you have permission to go big and have some fun!

Keep in mind this is also where you will be bidding them farewell so it will also be the last space they see as they leave. It is your last opportunity to wow them, it is worth the effort to make it fantastic.

2. Lighting Throughout Your Home

I simply cannot stress the importance of proper lighting. You can fill your home with the best designer furnishings, textiles, and wallpaper, but without proper lighting it literally cannot be seen or fully appreciated! It also sets ambiance and tone, so consider using a mix of lighting sources. Floor lamps, table lamps, and sconces create layers of light that can be adjusted according to different occasions. Everything should be on a dimmer switch for easy control.

Remember that natural light also needs appropriate attention! There are various types of windows and they need different types of coverings. Covering them appropriately goes a long way in keeping everyone (including you!) comfortable. Having a guest blinded from the sun during dinner is a sure way to kill the vibe. That’s the last thing you want them to remember you by!

3. Thoughtfully Arranged Comfortable Seating

Ensure your seating areas are thoughtfully arranged to encourage conversation and relaxation. Arrange furniture in a way that creates a cozy atmosphere. Comfortable sofas, plush armchairs, and a well-placed coffee table allow guests to unwind and feel at ease. In large rooms this can be a challenge. You can create multiple seating zones so guests can mingle and talk without needing to shout across the room.

Having enough tables to set drinks on is important. Keep coasters within arms reach. This anticipating this need encourages them to settle in without them needing to ask. (And you can trust that your furnishings are being respected!)

Add a touch of personality to your seating areas with decorative throw pillows and cozy throws. Consider introducing a statement piece, such as a bold accent chair or striking piece of art.

4. Expressive Art & Decor

Speaking of art, this should be carefully curated! You can showcase your personal style and experiences, which can spark conversations and help your guests get to know you on a deeper level. Skip the big box and mass produced art and choose pieces that resonate with you. What does the art make you think of? How do you feel when you look at it? Who made it and what is their story? All of these elements come together to create something unique and special. This can be beyond wall art and could be a striking sculpture, or a unique piece of pottery, everything contributes to adding the character every home needs.

If purchasing original art feels intimidating, rest assured there are many local galleries in Seattle and the east side that represent artists of all kinds and at all price points who are eager to help you.

Stay tuned for part 2!
