Creating a Teen Haven: Revamping A Lower-Level Den for the Modern Family

Meet our Shoreline family of five – two active teen boys, one lively baby, and their trusty canine companion. They sought to transform their lower-level den into a hub for teenage hangouts and playful toddler adventures, all while maintaining that modern, comfy vibe that defines their style.

Original Layout in Plan View:

Challenges & Solutions

Without demanding a ton of this busy families time, problems were solved with some simple solutions:

Strategic TV Placement: We mounted a larger TV on the opposite wall. The location was carefully planned so if they'd like to upgrade to a larger TV in the future they would not need to relocate the mount or the cabinet.

Acoustic Panels as a Focal Point: One of the problems they faced was the noise. The baby's room is directly above this room and they'd like to keep it on the quieter side during naps and late nights. These panels worked well to not only provid a beautiful focal point, but also mitigated some of the noise. The vertical lines helped the ceiling feel taller and more expansive as well.

Smart Storage: A wall-mounted TV console keeps cords tidy. With such a large sofa we didn't want the space to feel too full of furniture, implimenting a wall mounted console helped to keep cords tidy and the space more open than a large piece of furniture of the floor.

Sectional Seating: This large comfortable sofa provides much more seating for their whole family and their teens frequeent guests. By creating a hallway behind the sofa, it offers some much needed privacy to the bedrooms. Now the teens can come and go while their brother has friends over and not feel like they are looking directly into their bedroom.

Toddler-friendly Design: An oval coffee table minus sharp corners and designated toy storage meant a safe, playful space for the little one.

Active Play Area: Toys, swings, and crash pads were neatly arranged, offering the perfect spot for the growing baby to play and run while her brothers were away at school and it is too wet to play outside

Softened Lighting: New light fixtures introduced softer, mood-enhancing lighting. We said goodbye to those harsh overhead lights.

Style-wise, think modern meets warmth: neutral palettes paired with clean lines and an inviting array of textures. Their goals? Offering ample seating for family gatherings and hosting a squad of energetic teens, all while crafting a 'cool' spot for hangouts.
